Future of the Body or Future Body?

This weekend is the final weekend of our sk-interfaces exhibition and we're hosting an event called stitched-up where we draw together some of the ideas that we have discussed over the Body period of our Human Futures programme.

We're exploring what we think we need to discuss about the future of the body - or future bodies. . . . .

More Later,

I'm a gallery assistant and I've been looking after Paul Thomas' installation with my colleagues. A number of visitors have interacted with the piece, and they have been delighted with the results that come from touching the plate that is the interactive component of the work. When I had a go, I loved the way it picked up on my pulse, and it was more than strange to see myself connected to a projection through my heart. So when you touch the plate on the plinth, your heartbeat is represented live on the projection, as a beautiful complex image of - what seems to me to be - many moving pixels of varied colours. And what's more is that once you remove your finger, you remain connected, as if it's living off the heart of your finger.

In terms of our reflecting on the future of the body, I can't imagine a much more subtle illustration of how we're able to see our bodies represented back at us than in this installation. Although I've spent the past two months reflecting on the themes and theoretical issues of bio-art, I'm certainly no expert, but what I do think is that this combination of art, science, and technology gives us the most appropriate platform for thinking about where w're going - in terms of the three Human Futures themes: body, mind, world..
